PRACTICAL MEANS OF REDUCING THE NOISE EMITTED BY FAST DIESEL ENGINED VEHICLES

MOYENS PRATIQUES DE REDUCTION DU BRUIT EMIS PAR LES MOTEURS DIESEL RAPIDES

During the last ten years efforts have been made towards reducing the noise of diesel engines of slow vehicles and improving the comfort inside the vehicles as regards noise insulation. The results of this research have been used commercially when the 504 diesel peugeot was launched and mass-produced. The reduction in noise had been obtained by eliminating mechanical noise caused by the engine distribution mechanism and the gear box, and by considerably reducing combustion and injection sounds. A flow regulating device added to the injection pump enables the law of hydraulic pressure and that of fuel ignition to be adapted. More recently, systematic studies were started with a view to lowering the level of external noise in diesel-engined private cars. Some techniques utilized are limited modifications to the gear casing and outside walls of the engine together with insulating screens. /TRRL/
