SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF CARRIAGEWAY SURFACING

GRIFFIGKEIT VON FAHRBAHNBELAEGEN

The evaluation of measurements demonstrates the relatively strong influence of seasonal deviations, and also the influence of traffic. The studies have shown, that a practically viable substitute for the coefficient of sliding friction as measured on the Stuttgart friction meter can be obtained by a combination of the sand patch technique and the use of the pendulum apparatus. The maximum values of sliding friction are obtained when the peak-to-trough height of the roughened surface is 0.5 mm approximately. The skidding resistance increases with increasing voids content. An exact addition of the binder appears important to the skid resistance properties of the carriageway, over-fatted surfacings displaying unsatisfactory skid resistance properties. By means of the selection of a suitable aggregate it will be easier in future in the construction of surfacings to achieve a minimum value for the carriageway skid resistance. The studies reported show that the data obtained from the documents of tender bear no relation to the skid resistance, while the coefficients verified in the laboratory make it possible to reach definite decisions regarding the carriageway skid resistance. /TRRL/
