SPEED SELECTION AND MOTIVE FOR SPEED. FEATURES OF MOTORIST BEHAVIOUR AND THEIR RELATION TO MOTIVATIONAL CONDITIONS

TEMPOWAHLUND-MOTIVE. MERKMALE DES FAHRERVERHALTENS UND IHRE ZUERDUNG ZU MOTIVATIONALEN BEDINGUNGEN

This paper is based upon a project carried out in the accident research field for the German Road Research Organization, Research Association "Man in Traffic", entitled "Analysis of the Relations between Behaviour Experience, Attitudes and Opinions, and Confirmation of These in the Driving Behaviour of Motorists". The paper links four different experimental methods of traffic psychology. These are (1) the systematic observation of motorist behaviour (2) the questioning by questionnaire of attitudes specific to traffic (3) the exploration of motives and of experience factors in driving and (4) an accident analysis. The first three methods have in common the same random sample. The accident analysis focuses on the same standard highway section on which observations of traffic behaviour was carried out. On the one hand the study achieves a reciprocal ratification of attitudes and motives specific to traffic, and on the other, features of motorist behaviour. In addition, differences in behavioural patterns of parallel random samples of motorists before, and after, introduction of a 100 kph speed limit on highways and main roads were shown and represented in relation to their effects on the incidence of accidents. /TRRL/
