THE EFFICIENCY OF THE DISC BRAKE IN THE WET

ZUR WIRKSAMKEIT DER SCHEIBENBREMSE BEI NAESSEEINFLUSS

Floodwater, spray and splashing considerably impair the friction process and cause sudden and dangerous movements of the vehicle to take place. The combination of disc and drum brakes frequently used on cars may be regarded as being particularly detrimental under such operating conditions, as proper protection of the brake or its lining is not assured. Protection against spray and splashing, particularly when in conjunction with a self ventilating disc may be regarded as advantageous. Disc fitments which prevent water even in vapour form from coming into contact with the area of the brake linings are worth mentioning, as are the more water repellent brake lining materials. Until fully water repellent brake linings are available, the most effective methods of water conduction prevention should be combined with the most effective regulations for lessening friction loss, and this combination should be put into effect. By means of these combined regulations, sensitivity to wetness should receive the consideration necessary during the testing or acceptance of brakes and of vehicles. /TRRL/
