THE OPERATION OF URBAN MOTORWAY RING ROADS AND THEIR ANCILLARY NETWORK

L'EXPLOITATION DES VOIES RAPIDES PERIURBAINES ET DE LEUR RESEAU ASSOCIE.

This article examines the problems of traffic flow, safety, comfort and environment, which arise on urban motorway ring roads and their ancillary network. The means of solving these problems are two fold: (1) "static" equipment such as safety fences, lighting, traffic signs and signals; and (2) "dynamic" electronic equipment consisting of a traffic control system which gives an instantaneous knowledge of traffic conditions and possible incidents, warns the road user especially by means of variable signs, and sets into motion methods of dealing with incidents or accidents observed. This system should prove a valuable aid to the police whose task it is to supervise the operation of the network. The experience in this field is limited in France and other countries, the equipment being at the design or testing stage. Several "operation corridor" are being set up in the Paris region and in various regions in France. /TRRL/
