THE QUESTION OF THE FREQUENCY OF ACCIDENTS WHERE THE SAFETY BELT DID NOT HELP IN PREVENTING THE CONSEQUENCES

ZUR FRAGE DER HAEUFIGKEIT VON UNFAELLEN, BEI DENEN DER SICHERHEITSGURT NICHT ZUR VERMEIDUNG DER FOLGEN BEIGETRAGEN HAT

To determine whether the fastening of safety belts can lead to adverse consequences in the case of accidents, data concerning the injuries caused by use or non-use of safety belts were collected from casualty clinics, institutes for forensic medicine and police surgeons. These data were classified according to the type and severity of the accident. Considering all types of accidents, it was found that in only 25% of cases did the safety belt not help to reduce the injuries sustained by wearers and only in 1% of cases were the injuries aggravated by the safety belt. In relation to the type of accident, it was found that safety belts were especially effective in the case of glancing collisions. /TRRL/
