ON-SITE AIR MONITORING

Portable infrared (IR) analyzers for on-site air monitoring, produce accurate results and are versatile enough to measure any of the hundreds of chemicals commonly found in industrial environments. One miniature analyzer has a 20-m cell which fits into a package less that 0.5m in length. The long path length is achieved by reflecting the light back and forth by means of a series of mirrors inside the cell. Portable IR analyzers provide continuous sampling and measurement, with a response time that is dependent on how fast the sample can be introduced into the cell. The anlayzer is valuable to the industrial hygienist: with the use of the sample probe, high concentration areas resulting from leaks in equipment or poor production procedures can be easily located. The value of the instrument in area surveys, and air monitoring operations is discussed. Comments are also made on the use of the microcomputer in the instrument, and on the data processing.
