A SAFER HIGHWAY PROJECT THROUGH DEPLOYMENT OF ITS

Reconstruction of a highway interchange in Brooklyn, New York, without disruption of heavy commuter and commercial traffic posed a major challenge to the New York State Department of Transportation. During construction there would be lane changes, ramp restrictions and closures, and a three-mile-long section with moveable barriers for use by buses, taxes and vehicles with two or more passengers. The Department installed one of the first traffic control centers in the country specifically designed to lessen the impact of construction on motorist safety and mobility. The system proved such a success that the Department will make the center a permanent fixture. This article reviews the unique application of ITS as an integral part of a major road project.
