EFFECT OF HIGHER THAN DESIGN FLOODS ON THE BRIDGE NO. 929/1 OVER RIVER CHAMPA ON NH-31

Floods during July 1993 caused severe damage to the bridge over the River Champa on Indian National Highway NH-31 in western Assam. Due to excessive scour, one of the bridge piers tilted towards the upstream side, so that the superstructure over the bridge pier was also tilted. This paper presents the results of a study of why the bridge tilted, and of the remedial measures taken to restore the bridge; it also suggests some design modifications, to ensure the prevention of such occurrences in bridges built in the future. The cause of the scour was analysed mathematically by recalculating the hydraulic data adopted for the design, and by evaluating scour levels on the assumption that the present design and standard practice is correct. The worst effect, on the middle pier, is then discussed for conditions of uniform and non-uniform scour, under both straight and oblique flow conditions. The results of a comparative study between theoretical and observed scour are assessed. Several detailed recommendations are made for improving the bridge design. It is found that the structure could have been made much safer and much more durable for only a marginal increase in cost. Some recommendations for repairing the bridge are also made.
