THE SCOUR MECHANISM AND DEPTH OF BRIDGE ABUTMENTS
Based on hydraulic model experiments and picture data, the flow structure schemes of detour flow around bridge abutments and spur dikes are described, and vortex system which leads to scour analyzed, using hydromechanics principle. The vortex mechanism of the scour on bridge abutments and spur dikes is expounded. It is found and demonstrated that the key factors to determine the scour are the natural hydraulic conditions of river channels and the water-hindering conditions of embankments or spur dikes. According to long-timed equilibrium scour data, an equilibrium scour depth formula for bridge abutments and spur dikes is established, using graphs and regression analysis, which is verified by practically measured engineering data.
