PRECISION PLACED BASE INCREASES YIELD

The paper reports how a course of cement aggregates mixture base for the new southbound lane of 1-55 north of Bloomington, Illinois, was prepared and placed with the same precision as the concrete slab it supported. Heart of the mix system was a Barber-Greene twin-screw unit supplied with aggregates by a 30-in. wide and 70-ft. long inclined belt conveyor. This was fed by a 30-in. wide and 10-ft. long belt feeder, while a rotary vane feeder under a 250-bbl storage tank dropped Type 1 portland cement on the aggregates.
