ASPHALT VISCOSITY BY THE EXXON RAPID METHOD

Grade control testing of asphalt cement is fundamental both in manufacturing and in product acceptance. Today's usage of viscosity at 140 F for regulating grade, signifies the importance of good testing, as well as the need for less time consuming testing. The Exxon Rapid Method was developed with these purposes in mind and not as a replacement for ASTM D 2171 Absolute Viscosity of Asphalts, now the accepted standard. The Rapid Method has proven to be a useful tool in refinery control, reducing testing time and saving man-hours normally consumed by the ASTM standard procedure. This paper describes the essential features of the method and sets forth the testing procedure to follow.
