APPLICATION OF DYNAMIC TENSILE TESTING TO STRUCTURAL SUBSYSTEMS OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

The pavement design field is making increased use of elastic and viscoelastic structural layer analysis techniques. This involves consideration of three basic distress modes: fatigue cracking, permanent deformation, and thermal or shrinkage cracking. One of the important types of inputs to these analyses is the response of the layer materials, especially under repeated, or dynamic, tensile stresses, or strains. This paper describes the general nature of such analysis techniques, the basic materials properties required as inputs, and the available testing techniques. Emphasis is placed on the dynamic, or repeated-load, indirect tensile test as a simple and effective method for obtaining the needed characterization inputs.
