MINIMUM WEIGHT DESIGN OF STRUCTURES BASED ON BUCKLING STRENGTH AND PLASTIC COLLAPSE (1ST AND 2ND REPORTS)

The lateral buckling and the local torsional buckling of flanges will lead directly to the failure of girders. The buckling of web panels, however, does not mean the failure of girders, because the subsequent load after the web buckling can be supported by the frame-work of flanges and stiffeners and by the tension field action of buckled webs, thus giving rise to the phenomenon that is called post- buckling strength. It is necessary to the minimum weight design of plate girders that the postbuckling strength be taken into consideration. This report introduces a new approach to finding the ultimate strength of girders in post-buckling range. Theoretical values obtained by the present theory are in satisfactory coincidence with those obtained by the experiments conducted in various research institutes.
