STUDY ON THE BRITTLE FRACTURE CHARACTERISTICS OF TUBULAR JOINTS USED IN OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

Tubular joints used in offshore structures are subjected to severe working conditions. Besides the structural high stress concentration, there is a strong possibility of various kinds of fracture parameters such as welding residual stresses and weld defects existing in the superposed state. In this study, we reproduced various kinds of fracture parameters in tubular joint models and found that the effects of fracture parameters can be evaluated by measuring crack opening displacement, COD, at room temperature. By applying this method we succeeded in improving the conventional procedure of materials selection for offshore structures by experience to a more reasonable and dependable one.
