SOIL DRAINGE SYSTEM

A new subsurface soil drainage system has been developed which eliminates the blockage problems associated with french drains. The system consists of a sheet of semi-rigid spacer material covered with filter fabric. It is installed in a vertical position parallel to the trench wall and extending down to, and around, a preforated slotted pipe. The system is designed to create a natural filter in whatever type of soil it is installed. The mesh size of the filter cloth is chosen after analyzing the particle size of the soil to be drained. The reservoir requirement in the trench is achieved by filling the top of the trench with very large stones or rubble. Installation requires no special labor or plant, the materials are light and easy to handle and the trench can be backfilled with the excavated soil. The system can also be used as a barrier against the ingress of water under pavements and concrete structures, for the restoration of land slips on cuttings and embankments and as an antipollution cut-off to prevent toxic liquids from contaminating water courses.
