U. S. MERCHANT MARINE OPERATIONS
In this paper the various transport services provided by the U. S. Merchant Marine are described. An historical overview of the development of the U. S. Merchant Marine Fleet over the last forty-years is coupled with an analysis of the participation of U. S. flag ships in the Nation's commerce. The objective and the progress made under the Merchant Marine Act of 1970, is also examined as well as its effect on the carriage of a substantial portion of the Nation's foreign waterborne commerce. A discussion of the domestic trades is also included.
