MODULAR SURFACE SHIP BRIDGE CONTROL SYSTEM
The prototype surface ship bridge control system which provides at centralized locations the controls, displays and voice communications necessary to the performance of most bridge watch duties for future U. S. Navy warships includes a console, to be located in the pilothouse, containing the required equipments such as radar and closed-circuit television displays, voice communications gear, instruments and controls for heading and speed, an automatic logger, whistle controls and navigation light controls, and other controls and displays. A digital computer provides quickened manual steering, automatic course control, automatic tracking of radar contacts and contact motion analysis for tactical maneuvering and collision avoidance. A digital television controlled by the computer and a digital scan converter is used to drive the main displays. A radar data converter having front-end commonality with the digital scan converter interfaces surface-search radar to the computer to provide automatic tracking and limited automatic detection of radar contacts at an operator-selected range. Duplicates of some of the controls and displays of the console are provided to permit steering and propulsion control from the bridge wings during operations requiring exceptional visibility. The console in the pilothouse is normally manned by one officer and one enlisted man, both seated or standing.
