CALCULATION OF DISPLACEMENTS AND HORIZONTAL FORCES IN BRIDGE PIERS

CALCULO DE DESPLAZAMIENTOS Y FUERZAS HORIZONTALES EN PILAS DE PUENTES

The author describes a theoretical study of the horizontal forces transmitted to the bridge piers by the deck. The movements of the deck were determined by means of equations. The study dealt with bridge decks without joints and with continuous beams or slab resting on independent beams. The various components of the piers are considered, and a method is given for determining the rigidity of each component and of the whole pier. The components studied are the foundations, the shaft, the lintel, and supporting devices (joints, rollers, chloroprene reinforced with steel hoops or restrained). A special investigation was made into the elastoplastic behaviour of neoprene and teflon supporting devices. /TRRL/
