From 1944 to 1973 rigid pavement construction suffered most because of the financial crisis. Since 1973, following the oil crisis, concrete construction costs the same as and sometimes even less than other forms of construction. The author reviews the different applications of cement in the field of road construction, especially in roadbases and surfacings. Mention is made of the structural files produced by the SETRA, which define the thicknesses of the slab as a function of the traffic and the supporting soil, and of the "Cahier des Prescriptions Communes" (Volume of common specifications), number 28, published by the "ministere de l'equipement", that defines the characteristics required from concrete. Some data are presented on: (1) concrete ingredients (cement, aggregates, water, admixtures) and curing agents, and joints; (2) techniques of repairing the surface by spreading of surface dressings, or grooving; (3) gravel cement roadbases for which recommendations issued by the SETRA exist. /TRRL/
