CHEMICAL SOIL STABILIZATION BY MEANS OF ELECTRO KINETICS

The use of chemicals in combination with electro kinetic techniques is recommended for the grouting of fine cracks and fissures. This involves the injection of two chemicals, resulting in a reaction and the precipitation of stable material. Thereby a dewatering is first achieved, so that the water flows through a system of electrodes (perforated steel pipes) to the cathodes and is there absorbed or evaporates. A formula is proposed for the velocity of the water movement, which is dependent mainly on the influence of the field strength and the resistance. At the same time, the chemicals are sucked back - at a lower velocity. The requirements of the chemicals are briefly outlined and magnesium silicofluoride, which causes an irreversible deposition of silicic acid, is taken as an example. The proportion of injected material can be determined continuously from the specific resistance of the geo-electric mixture. Relation between stabilization and time and the specific resistance and plasticity are reviewed. The problem of reversibility is examined - as well as the relation of the cost breakdown (drilling, stabilization plant/materials) to the depth of soil layer and the strength of the layer to be stabilized. /TRRL/
