HYDRAULIC FILL IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION
LE REMBLAYAGE HYDRAULIQUE EN CONSTRUCTION ROUTIERE
The hydraulic extraction and hydraulic transport of sand are operations which are not specific to road construction. Mention is made of the use of the suction dredger and of the evacuation of the sand-water mixture. Because, in road construction, the mixture is deposited on a long stretch of terrain, the evacuation pipe must be frequently extended, therefore the bearing capacity of the embankment must become adequate very quickly. Details are given of a method which forecasts the time-related evolution in the bearing capacity. It is based on the variation in the level of the water table which influences the moisture content of the sand in the embankment. Some measurements made on experimental files are given, the files consisted of a mixture with a high fines content. The use of this material gives rise to many difficulties because of the slow rate of increase of the CBR index. /TRRL/
