METHANOL AS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL FOR OTTO ENGINES
METHANOL ALS ALTERNATIVKRAFTSTOFF FUER OTTOMOTOREN
The conversion of conventional petrol driven combustion engines to methanol operation can be effected relatively quickly from the automobile engineering viewpoint. The remaining problems to be solved are confined mainly to fuel technology questions, particularly to the effort involved in a simpler design of cold start mechanism. The advantages of the methanol concept, apart from the achievement of the objective of petrol economy, are improved engine efficiency, lower emission of noxious substances and higher engine power. Whether methanol will in fact succeed in the near future on a large scale as a substitute for petrol fuels will depend ultimately on the development costs in relation to the cost of petrol. /TRRL/
