ROAD ACCIDENTS: PENETRATION INJURIES AND CONTUSIONS OF THE THORAX AND STOMACH

STRASSENUNFACLLE OFFENE UND-STUMPFE VERLETZUNGEN VON THORAZ UND BAUCH

Accidents to children have become the number one problem. In 1967, 2682 children were victims of traffic accidents, i.e. 15.7% of all traffic deaths. The author deals particularly with penetration injuries and contusions to the thorax and abdomen. The former are relatively rare in children, thanks to the elasticity of the childs breast cage, - over a period of 21 years a total of 126 thorax injuries were observed out of 2713 accidents involving children, i.e. 4.6%. In all cases these involved contusions. With respect to age distribution, the 5 to 11 year old groups clearly predominated, with a peak at age 10. Approximately one third of stomach injuries - 462 cases in 22 years- were due to road accidents, and there is a growing tendency for these to increase because of increased motorization. The age distribution shows a definite peak between 5 and 6, and between 15 and 16. The ratio between boys and girls is 3:1, a result of the greater participation of boys in sport and games and in road traffic. A description of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for penetration injuries and contusions of thorax and abdomen follows. /TRRL/
