MOTORCYCLE BRAKING

In studies of improved braking systems for motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, experimental work at TRRL has included the development of an anti-lock hydraulic braking system. Research using the system has shown that on a range of surfaces with friction coefficients down to 0.3, motorcycles between 90-225 kg can be stopped using only front wheel braking without wheel locking. Performance on good road surfaces is not impaired. Future research will include fitting both light- and heavy-weight motorcycles with anti-lock brakes on both wheels, and also to investigate the feasibility of this installation with a coupled brake control. /TRRL/
