The paper reviews the history of standard ships, and describes the standard models "SD 14" and "SD 26" and the reasons for their selection. Outline arrangements are given. The design of the shipyard is then dealt with, together with principles from improving output and productivity. The unit build-up and construction plan to achieve a 20-day production cycle from the new block assembly/semi-tandem berth complex is analyzed in detail, attention being drawn to the advanced outfitting which is a key feature.
