This paper concerns the newly developed calculating method of hydrodynamic characteristics of marine propellers in a viscous fluid. Firstly, in this method, hydrodynamic characteristics of marine propellers in a non-viscous fluid are calculated by applying the propeller lifting surface theory; and at each propeller section, the so-called corresponding two-dimensional wing which has the same hydrodynamic property and geometrical thickness distribution as in the corresponding propeller section is derived from the calculated circulation distribution. Secondly, the circulations corrected taking into account the effects of viscosity and drag coefficients of propeller sections are obtained by using the calculated boundary layer properties of the corresponding two-dimensional wings. Moreover, the increase of drag coefficient due to roughness effects with also taken into account by the use of the equivalent sand roughness and resistance formula of a sand-roughened plate. Thus the propeller characteristics in a viscous fluid are obtained from these circulations and drag coefficients. When the calculated results of propeller performance are compared with open-water test results, it can be seen that the calculation and experimental results are in good agreement. The scale and roughness effects of propeller performance can also be examined by this method.
