In the first discussion, it is noted that the parametric studies presented in the paper contribute to the understanding of the mechanics of crack development in zoned earth dams and to the development of adequate analytical tools for their prediction. In addition to arching as a probable cause of cracking, the discusser cites tensile stress as another important cause of cracking. It is noted that as far as analyzing arching as a cause of cracking is concerned, total stress analysis, as used in the paper, has severe limitations. In the second discussion, the importance of investigating, during the course of design, the safety of dam project against hydraulic fracturing and other failures are noted. Although the work presented cannot relieve the dam designer of the necessary investigational work, the role of the various dam geometries and material properties are sufficiently discussed to explain why the truly dangerous cases, and failures due to hydraulic fracturing are rare events.
