APPLICATION OF ENERGY METHOD
A calculation procedure for soil stability analyses applying the energy method is described. The procedure follows a suggested scheme in which special attention is devoted to the construction of failure mechanisms and determination of boundary conditions for deformations of these failure mechanisms. Applicability of the energy method is proved and application of the method is demonstrated by five examples: (1) Short-term analysis of a slope; (2) long-term analysis of a slope; (3) analysis of stratified medium; (4) bearing capacity of a footing loaded by a pulsating load causing pore pressure rise; and (5) stability of an offshore structure having three degrees-of-freedom during failure. Determination of plastic strain and displacements by means of a hodograph is shown both for short-term and long-term analysis in two additional examples. /Author/
