MARINE TRAFFIC SYSTEMS: A LINGUISTIC APPROACH
Because English is the lingua franca of the sea, a thorough linguistic investigation of the language used in the different maritime activities, especially for non-English speaking people, is necessary. The I.M.C.O., being aware of the vital role of language, has published the Standard Marine Navigational Vocabulary (Vocabulary) which is an attempt at standardizing the language used at sea. This paper, which is concerned primarily with the function and nature of language as a means of communication, includes an analysis of the vocabulary on linguistic bases particularly as a document designed for international use.
