THREE-PHASE LOCOMOTIVE TRACTION AND ITS IMPORTANCE FOR THE FUTURE

After detailed theoretical consideration of the characteristics of the three-phase traction system, the author describes the advantages resulting from the introduction of the collector-less asynchronous motor. Also discussed is the network behaviour of the new technique and the hitherto employed single-phase and mixed-current series motors. The advantages of the new system for electric braking are explained and the dimensioning of the main components is described. Much space is devoted to a comparison of the new traction method with the locomotive design of the 1909s. The author concludes by examining the advantages of the three-phase system for the design of the locomotive. The last section shows the extent to which the new technology has found application in wider circles.
