Equipment on board the Petrel, a recently completed dynamically positioned drillship, is briefly described. The vessel requires no mechanical anchoring devices, but is kept on station by its twin propellers and several transverse thrusters. Propulsion units are controlled by a computer that constantly registers charges in force and direction of wind and currents, and compares these with the position which the vessel must maintain to continue drilling. Advantages of this type of design are summarized.
