THE VALUE OF SHIPPING TO THE U.S. ECONOMY

The value of shipping to the economy of the United States must be considered within the context of the nation's role as both a world power and most importantly for purposes of this discussion, a predominant trading nation. This article does not intend to address the case for shipping as an element of national security because it is both obvious and beyond the terms of reference given the author. It will, however, endeavour to set forth the basic reasons why the economic well being of the United States necessitates uninterrupted access to ocean transport services and why substantial American-flag participation is required.
