Actual experience with instrumentation on offshore structures is presented. Structures were instrumented to monitor such items as vessel motion; marine riser stresses; stresses and loads in critical structural members; wave, wind and current conditions; and operational parameters. Types of structures include platforms, semisubmersibles and ships. Types of instruments are presented, as well as read-out methods, including techniques for automated recording and processing of data. Also described are methods for using instrumentation to obtain critical design information, and to monitor safety.
