A brief description is given of Britain's first precast concrete bridge to be built using incremental launching. The bridge situated near Reading, Berkshire will take eastbound A4 traffic over the Longon-Wales railway line and so relieve the neighbouring 19th century Brunel bridge. The bridge is designed as nine separate post-tensioned concrete box sections stressed together over 3 spans. The structure has to be tensioned, both for the launching operation and the bridge's final working situation. The method of construction and positioning of each section is described. A close monitoring system, utilising a laser, checks on the push direction. /TRRL/
