PERMANENT UNDERGROUND OPENINGS IN NORWAY - DESIGN APPROACH AND SOME EXAMPLES
This paper is divided into three parts. The introductory comments outline the extensive use of the underground for permanent installations in Norway, followed by a brief description of the geological and topographical features of the country. In part II, the general engineering geological procedure followed in the design of permanent underground openings is described. This procedure is divided into the following stages: (I) the choice of a location, (II) orientation of the opening, (III) selection of shape for the opening, and (IV) dimensioning of the opening. The particular problems of each of these stages are discussed. In the final part III, four different examples of permanent underground openings which have recently been taken into use are described: a sport center, a swimming pool, a telecommunication center, and a drinking water reservoir. Some cost figures are given. Comparisons with similar structures above ground show that the use of underground openings not only is fully competitive, but also under the right conditions clearly more favourable.(a) /TRRL/
