USING PHOTOGRAPHS TO MAP TRAFFIC ACCIDENT SCENES: A MATHEMATICAL TECHNIQUE

This paper describes a mapping technique that is based on the mathematical relationship between points in one plane, such as a roadway surface, and the projection of those points in another plane, namely a film image of that roadway surface. The technique can be applied to any photograph, providing four calibration points can be identified and measured on both the roadway and the film image of that roadway.
