This paper presents the results of a statistical noise analysis of some 69 motor ships and 24 turbine ships in the 3,000-65,000-dwt range. The noise outputs of individual accommodation spaces, the machinery space, and wheelhouse were surveyed and analysed in consideration of noise paths aboard ship. Results may be summarised as follows: 1) The average noise level of a machinery space has no relation to main engine output. 2) The noise level in the machinery space of a turbine ship is about 7 dB (A) less than that of a motor ship. 3) The arrangement of accommodation spaces aboard ship may be considered to achieve a target noise level.
