THE APPLICATION OF SUPER BARGES IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

Super barges are becoming an important part of the distribution patterns of major oil companies for their finished products on the East and Gulf coasts of the United States. Although barging has been used in the oil industry for many years, it has now become an economic input for comparison with tankers for long-range planning. Changes are taking place in the barging industry at a rapid rate to accommodate the gap caused by non-replacement of handy size tankers. One of the key factors in successful deep-sea barge and tug operation is the personnel. There are no training schools and each company has been required to set up its own system for bringing along crews to cope with the increasing size of equipment. The future will see a change in the structure of barge companies to accommodate the last investment required and the different type shore-side personnel to administer coastwise operation.
