PREFABRICATED GIRDER ROAD BRIDGES WITH TRANSITION STRUCTURES IN THE FORM OF CONTINUOUS REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS

CESTOVNI MONTAZNI GREDNI MOSTOVI S PRIJELAZNIM KONSTRUKCIJAMA U OBLIKU ARMIRANOBETONSKIH KONTINUITETNIH PLOCA

Bridge spans made of prestressed concrete and a composite single beam steel structure with several panels are cheaper than continuous systems and have very often been used in viaduct construction over the past ten years. However, on most projects the joints between adjacent panels are incorrectly provided by expansion devices which do not provide for a permanent continuity of transition in the pavement slab. The article discusses in detail the structural problems in the longitudinal layout of bridges consisting of a series of single beams on which joints above the pillars are provided in the form of flexible slabs instead of the conventional expansion structures. Attention is focussed on expansion problems, and the hope is expressed that Yugoslav designers will start applying to a greater extent the solutions which have for some time been used in Switzerland, France and West Germany. /TRRL/
