PREFABRICATED SURFACE DRESSINGS

LES ENDUITS PREFORMES

Using results of tests carried out on small surfaces, the author shows the importance and the applications of the surface dressings manufactured in the factory. This technique consists in manufacturing in the factory a waterproof wearing course which is then glued on the road surface. If such surface dressings are laid on highly flexible supporting material, they have a high resistance to wear by vehicles, including by vehicles equipped with studded tyres. The stripping of chippings can be reduced to less than 5 per thousand for every million vehicles travelling along the road. Details are given of the manufacturing process and laying by means of specially designed machines. The structure of these surface dressings which comprises a waterproof and flexible supporting layer, gives them properties such as absorption of cracking and damping under traffic. This technique is in an advanced stage of development and will soon be used to surface engineering structures, cracked pavements, and some isolated stretches of heavily-trafficked roads. /TRRL/
