CONTRIBUTION TO THE PHYSICO-MECHANICAL STUDY OF ROAD BITUMINOUS MIXTURES AND ELASTOTHERMOPLASTIC POLYMERS

CONTRIBUTION A L'ETUDE PHYSIOC-MECANIQUE DE MELANGES DE BITUMES ROUTIRS ET DE POLYMERES ELASTOTHERMOPLASTIQUES

This article discusses the modification in the physico-mechanical properties of road bitumen by addition of thermoplastic elastomers. The theoretical concepts governing the conduct of the study and the selection of polymers are outlined. Results obtained as a function of the polymer content, origin and refining process of the bitumen, content and nature of the petroleum oil added are given. These results show that, from 4 per cent of the polymers studied, a marked reduction in bitumen thermosensitivity and an increase in bitumen elasticity and cohesion occur, but that an improvement in deformability at low temperature depends mainly on the ratio and structure of polymer and also on the threshold of compatibility of the polymer with the bitumen. /TRRL/ /TRRL/
