MEASUREMENT OF SOIL PROPERTIES BY MEANS OF SELF-DRILLING

MESURE DES CARACTERISTLQUES DES SOLS PAR AUTOFORAGE

Self-drilling is a new method of measuring soil characteristics in-situ. It differs from conventional methods because of the lack of severe disturbances which take place before the mechanical test. Details are given of the test principle and of the practical applications: self-drilling pressiometers, friction probe, square or hexagonal probes for measuring horizontal pressure, self-drilling permeability meter. The phenomena occurring during the self-drilling phase, e.g. During the installation of the probes are analyzed and discussed. Results typical of each current apparatus are given. On the whole those results differ widely from the results obtained with conventional methods. /TRRl/
