INVESTIGATION ON TWO-GIRDER BRIDGE DECKS

Three micro-concrete models of two-girder bridge decks were tested in the elastic range and then to destruction. The first model had no cross-member while the second had three cross-beams and the third was provided with three diaphragms. No appreciable distribution of load between the two longitudinal girders was noticed for any models when the load was placed on one of the longitudinals. The cross members reduced the slab deflections significantly - the cross girder being more efficient than the diaphragm. Based on the test, a semi-empirical method has been developed to estimate end moments along the periphery of the deck slab panel. /TRRL/
