ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE

This book deals with all aspects of road traffic noise including an estimate of the population affected and a description of measures that can be taken to implement recent legislation. The author describes the fundamental concepts of sound and the hearing mechanism. Methods of measuring and synthesising road traffic noise are discussed, several methods of predicting noise are given. The manner in which various components of noise combine such as those caused by exhaust, engine, road and tyre and wind is examined. The effect of embankments and cuttings, and noise barriers on sound, and the methods of insulating buildings from sound are investigated. Noise control criteria examined include those of S.S. Stevens, K.D. Krgter and the ISO. Transportation noise policies adopted by the UK and other bodies are reviewed. International noise standards, changes to noise insulation regulations since 1973, loadness and noisiness indices are given in appendices. /TRRL/
