ESTIMATION OF THE INITIAL AND THE DEFERRED SETTLEMENTS OF SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS

The authors consider the settlement of shallow foundations, consisting of the "initial" settlement and the "deferred" settlement. These terms are preferred to the "immediate" and "consolidation" settlements introduced by L. Bjerrum. The secondary settlement is not taken into account in this study. The general expression of the pore pressure in an undrained test is deduced; the particular forms of expression are inferred afterwards, for the isotropic linear-elastic soil and the aelotropic linear-elastic soil (or revolving orthotropic, i.e., having identical physical and mechanical properties in all horizontal directions, but different in the horizontal direction as against the vertical direction). For the aelotropic soil, the "A" coefficient (after Skempton) resulted as depending on soil skeleton properties only, while the "B" coefficient depends, in addition, on the pore fluid compressibility. Relations are established between the Young moduli and the Poisson coefficients of the soil in the undrained state (which governs the initial settlement) and in the drained state (which governs the final settlement). The relationships are particularized for the isotropic and the aelotropic linear-elastic soil. The settlement-amount prognosis, separate from the two main components, is made for the particular case of the saturated linear-elastic soil according to a bidimensional model suggested by the main author in his doctoral thesis (Grenoble University, 1974), is closer to reality than the unidimensional Terzaghi model. The relationships deduced by the authors have a wide field of applicability in soil mechanics, not only for settlement calculation. The paper is conclusive, on the whole, treats the problem completely, and addresses all categories of civil engineers. /Author/
