A SURVEY OF MANEUVERING AIDS

After a brief outline of the history of transverse thrusters, the article surveys many of the transverse and omni-directional thrusters now available for general, dynamic-positioning, and station-keeping applications, together with some special types of rudder. Many of the devices are illustrated in diagrams and photographs. The types described and discussed, several of them only very briefly, include:-- the Navyflux Y-thruster; the water-jet transverse thruster, as adopted in some French-flag BP tankers and by Kawasaki; the Gill hydraulic-jet bow thrust and propulsion unit, made by J. Samuel White & Co.; Stone Managanese Marine's TC thrust-unit; the Schottel Anti-Suction Tunnel system; Orenstein & Koppel's Tornado transverse thruster; Murray & Tregurths's Harbormaster; the Finnish Aquamaster and its Aquapilot control; the Liaaen Compass all-round thruster; Ullstein's single-lever manoeuvring system, with two propellers and three side-thrusters; and Liaaen's Poscon system, which has single-lever control for two main propellers, twin rudders, and a pair of thrusters. It is mentioned that the British Kiwi, which is being converted for rig maintenance operations in the North Sea, will have four retractable Schottel rudder-propellers, driven by deck-mounted Diesels, for lateral thrust; the arrangement is illustrated. Special rudders included in the survey, and sim8larly described and discussed, are:-- the Becker rudder; a Russian three-rudder arrangement for river craft; the schilling Universal rudder and Twin-Rudder; the Pleuger Aktiv rudder; the Rotorudder, now marketed by Y-ARD, and the Jastram Ruderotor; Burness Corlett's Towmaster; and a nozzle-rudder, with Hannan slots, supplied by R. M. Green & Silley Wier.
