EDP PROGRAM PRODUCES CUTTING-PLANS AUTOMATICALLY
A brief description is given of ASCO (Automatische Schnittplan-Optimierung, i.e. automatic cutting-plan optimisation), an EDP program for nesting in preparation for the cutting of parts of any shape from sheet or plate materials used in various industries including, in addition to shipbuilding and other engineering industries, the textile, woodworking, and plastics industries. The program, based on the Monte Carlo method, was developed by Krupp, with the support of the West German Government. ASCO can be used with any computer having a core memory of at least 128 K-bytes. A Fortran compiler, high-speed printer, card-reader, and magnetic disc are also required. A plotter presents the cutting plan to any desired scale; the plan can then if necessary, be modified manually in a few places before the NC punched tape is produced. The article explains the procedure further, with an example.
