WHICH SCRAPER IS BEST IN SOFT ROCK? PUSH-LOADER OR SELF- LOADER

The advantages of using the self-loaded scraper and the push loaded scraper for the excavation of soft rock are set forth. Analyses show that both scrapes have approximately equal unit costs on short haul work of less than 2000 ft. Longer than 2000 ft the push-loaded scraper gives lower unit cost. As the rock formation merges into meduim hard rock the advantages of the push-loaded tractor increases. However, advantages of the self-loaded scraper include cost savings by elimination of push tractor; higher efficiency because there are no delays in the cut while a scraper waits for a push tractor; and flexibility achieved with integral operation. The push-loaded scraper is recommended for massive excavations in earth, earth-rock, and rock. The self-loaded scraper is recommended for moderate excavations in earth and soft rock formations. Cycle time curves for scrapers, as well as cost curves are discussed.
