CONSIDERATIONS ON THE PLANNING OF OFF-SHORE AIRPORTS

CONSIDERAZIONI SULLA PROGETTAZIONE DEGLI AEROPORTI FUORI COSTA

In view of the ever increasing difficulties in siting airports on land, the author examines the possibilities of off-shore sea installations. It is suggested that the most advanced maritime and airport technologies would allow the construction of complete airports or partial flying facilities on water by means of floating systems, or supported on piers. Different types of installation and construction techniques are described and illustrated, and their costs compared. The possibilities are also examined, in terms of local needs and conditions, of applying their technologies to other structures or services which could coexist with the airport. Solutions are presented for airports at Genoa, Venice, Naples, Catania, Agrigento, and Cagliari. /TRRL/
